Let’s talk about renewable energy and sustainability in the Caribbean.
What is renewable energy? Why don’t these islands use more of it? What are the relevant options for us? How can we all do more to benefit from it? What is the role of government? Why is this important anyway? These are just some of the things we need to talk about.
We’re running a poll at http://www.greenislandinc.com/ that asks which is the most promising renewable energy option for the Caribbean.
To date, solar energy is the option of choice for respondents, followed by geothermal energy and wind energy. Ocean energy, biomass, hydro and biofuels bring up the rear.
Over the next few weeks we’ll be looking at these issues, starting with a general review of renewable energy. I hope you’ll join the discussion.

Despite the fact that solar radiation is very strong in the Caribbean region, develoment of solar energy will be limited to roofs. Most of the islands are mountainous and space to develop a solar thermal plant, for instance, is not available. The same applies to wind power. Solar and wind power will certainly help to reduce dependence on imported fuels, but I believe geothermal power offers the best potential for renewable energy development. If I remember correctly, Dominica has the greatest potential of all the Windward Islands.
Looking forward to reading your posts.
